So-called special interest groups have been on the minds of two candidates facing off in Tuesday’s state Senate District 4 Republican primary.
Longtime District 4 Sen. Billy O’Dell, of Greenwood, is set to meet challenger Riley Harvell, of Honea Path, in Tuesday’s primary. There is not a Democratic candidate in the District 4 race.
O’Dell has said the S.C. Club for Growth political action committee (PAC), which has endorsed and supported Harvell, is trying to heavily influence the race. Meanwhile, Harvell – who recently put out an eight-page newspaper-style advertisement which was sharply critical of O’Dell on a number of issues – accuses O’Dell of receiving more than $30,000 in campaign donations from PACs or perceived special interest groups this year.
The S.C. Club for Growth, according to its website, is “a network of South Carolinians, from all walks of life, who believe that prosperity and opportunity come through economic freedom.” The site says the PAC “work(s) to promote public policies that promote economic growth primarily through legislative involvement, issue advocacy, research, training and educational activity.” Harvell said he embraces the Club for Growth’s endorsement.

“I’ve worked with the Club for Growth in the past on some elections,” said Harvell, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. “It’s always been one of those endorsements and supports that we have been looking for. What they are is, essentially, is a coalition of businessmen from across the state. They have a board of directors, they have an executive director in Columbia and they push what they call ‘pro-growth legislation,’ legislation that lessens the burden and regulation on businesses, small businesses in particular.”
Meanwhile, O’Dell, who has been in the senate for 24 years, said he thinks he has been targeted* by Club for Growth.
*Jeenyus Corner Note*
As an individual who is concerned about my children’s financial future, I’d suggest to Mr. O’Dell….
If you don’t want to be targeted by angry tax payers who get involved….
THEN DON’T SPEND $1,000,000.00 ON A FREAKING GREEN BEAN MUSEUM!!!
And that’s how it SHOULD be TOLD!
